Butterfly Click Test
Two fingers, one button — the butterfly click test measures your alternating click speed over 10 seconds, and the guide below teaches the technique.
Butterfly clicking alternates your index and middle finger on one mouse button, so while one presses, the other is already coming back down. The butterfly click test above counts how fast you can sustain that pedalling motion over 10 seconds. Single-finger clicking tops out around 5–7 CPS for most people; a practised butterfly clicker reaches 8–12 without ever reaching for a tremor technique.
What is butterfly clicking?
Butterfly clicking is a two-finger mouse technique: both fingertips rest side by side on the primary button and take turns pressing, so while one finger is going down the other is already coming back. That alternation roughly doubles what a single finger can manage, and it grew out of the Minecraft PvP and CPS-challenge communities where click speed is a visible stat. Unlike jitter clicking it does not rely on tensing the forearm into a tremor — the speed comes from pedalling, which is why it stays comfortable over a full 10-second window.
How to butterfly click
- Rest both fingertips side by side on the left button — index nearest the front, middle just behind it.
- Press with the front finger while the back finger lifts, then swap. Pedal, don't hammer.
- Keep the hand loose. Tension is the enemy; a relaxed hand alternates faster than a determined one.
- Find an even rhythm before chasing speed — ragged timing wastes presses that already counted as clicks.
- Build up with short daily runs of the butterfly click test, and raise the tempo only when 8–10 CPS starts to feel easy.
What is a good butterfly click speed?
These are AimTests' own challenge tiers for butterfly clicking, not population benchmarks or professional esports ratings. Compare the same duration, input method and device:
| Tier | CPS range |
|---|---|
| Untrained | 1–4 |
| Average player | 5–7 |
| Skilled | 8–10 |
| Advanced | 11–14 |
| Needs review | 15+ |
Use the butterfly click test bands as practice targets. The 15+ “Needs review” band is a reminder to check macros and switch behaviour. High CPS alone cannot identify automation, and a high rate does not exclude your result from local comparisons.
Butterfly vs jitter vs drag clicking
| Butterfly | Jitter | Drag | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fingers used | Two, alternating | One, muscle tremor | One, sliding |
| Typical CPS | 8–12 | 8–14 | 10–30+ |
| Sustainability | Most repeatable | Fatigues fast | Entirely mouse-dependent |
| Switch wear | Concentrated on one switch | Moderate | High |
Rule of thumb: butterfly for reliable speed, jitter for short bursts, drag only if your mouse allows it.
Why butterfly clicking matters in games
Click speed is a real stat in Minecraft PvP, CPS challenges and any game where right-click spam has a ceiling you can push. A trained butterfly clicker clears those games' practical requirements without straining into tremor techniques, and a solid butterfly click test score is the proof. In tactical shooters, raw clicking speed matters far less than aim and crosshair placement — treat a high butterfly clicking score as one tool in the kit, not the whole toolbox.
Why your clicks sometimes don't register
The most common complaint in butterfly communities is the vanished click, and it is usually hardware. Mouse firmware debounces the switch — it deliberately ignores presses that arrive faster than a human should manage — and aggressive debounce settings swallow alternating presses whole. Two butterfly clickers with the same fingers can post wildly different scores because one mouse listens and the other filters. If your clicks disappear mid-burst, change the mouse or its polling/debounce settings before blaming your technique.
Is butterfly clicking bad for your hand or your mouse?
For the hand, short practice blocks at sensible intensity are generally fine; pain, tingling or numbness is a stop sign, not a milestone. For the mouse, the honest answer is that butterfly clicking hammers one switch from two fingers, concentrating wear there — budget mice used for heavy butterfly click test practice die younger. Neither risk is a reason to stop playing; both are reasons to take breaks and keep sessions short.
Why test on AimTests
The butterfly click test above uses millisecond timing and counts distinct presses without a speed cap. The first press counts; leaving the tab or cancelling saves no score.
